The North West Detention Center (NWDC) is a privately owned detention center for immigrants. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a publicly funded federal agency that seeks out and detains non-citizens in the United States. The NWDC is not a prison - many of the people detained have never done anything criminal. This means that our tax dollars are used so that a for-profit detention center makes millions via ICE hunting, capturing, and forcibly detaining people solely because they are non-citizens.
Though it is not a prison, the conditions inside the NWDC are by many accounts worse than a prison. Meals there are unhealthy and often inedible - rocks, plastic, and even a human tooth have been found in the food. People are given used undergarments, blankets that aren't big enough to cover their bodies, and forced to sleep in brightly lit rooms. The inhumane conditions of this detention center are a natural consequence of locking human beings away for profit.
The NWDC was built on top of a superfund site- the Tacoma tidal flats. This is a place where the land was deemed too toxic for human habitation- but not too toxic for the forcibly detained, apparently. This is environmental racism- plain and simple.
The tidal flats are also a unique and important ecosystems that should not be polluted by industry or destroyed with detention centers.
There is no acceptable place to lock away innocent people, deny them their basic rights, and make a profit doing it. The NWDC should be closed down and removed permanently for the health of the entire South Sound and her people!
Work along side the experts who know the most about this oppressive system - former detainees and their families.
